This just may be AFI's best album. After a long run of solid thrash-punk LPs in the '90s, AFI broke big in the 2000s with a major label and goth makeover, but hits like "Miss Murder" and "Girl's Not
Grey" were never poppy or toothy enough to justify their maudlin excesses. On Burials, they sweeten their arrangements with subtle touches: creeping orchestral ambience and anxious single-note
piano on "I Hope You Suffer," sparkling lead guitar in the breakdown of "A Deep Slow Panic" and one of their greatest riffs ever in the Johnny Marr-like harmonics of "Greater Than 84."
