Aretha Franklin Sings The Great Diva Classics
Label: RCA RECORDS LABEL
At 72, Aretha Franklin's still got it. She can't hit her crazy high notes anymore, and she's been overtly stylizing her delivery since the 1980s, but there's plenty of color and range left in her voice. The keepsakes on this covers album include "the Aretha version" of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep," which transitions wonderfully into Diana Ross' "Ain't No Mountain High Enough"; her house mix of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive"; and those famous Aretha ad-libs. "Pump up the groove!" she commands on "I'm Every Woman." This is warm enough to keep the family home cozy during the holidays.
