The Sixth Extinction
Label: Music Theories
This ecologically minded two-disc rock opera -- starring members of King's X, Symphony X, Planet X and Blind Guardian -- is daunting. Four of its 15 songs (including both "The Fifth Extinction" and "The Sixth Extinction") have at least five subtitles each. The lyrics are arranged like a play, and the plot's difficult to follow. But the music's good: clanky buildups, Celtic folk parts, sea chanteys, a melody (in "Comatose") echoing Dido's "Thank You," a rhythm (in "E = MC2") halfway between "Immigrant Song" and Eurodisco, plus some heavenly vocals from the Gathering's Anneke van Giersbergen.
