Radio Mindelo is a gem for the serious collector who's on the hunt for rare recordings. These tracks were recorded by a sound engineer at Cape Verde's Radio Barlavento in the early '60s, and then promptly stashed in a cupboard and forgotten about. Four decades later, the songs reveal a young singer whose preternaturally mature voice was already -- astonishingly -- in place. The rough production quality and the spontaneity of the songs actually liberate Evora from her current grand dame status. As a young woman, she sounds a bit less mournful ... she might even be having fun.
