Cold War Kids' pounding piano and zigzagging falsettos were made for the wall-of-synths and stadium-reverbed aesthetic that's brought bands like fun. and Foster the People serious fame, and you can tell from the first boom-clap on their fifth album's "First." Those percolating, Edge-style guitars-masquerading-as-synths show up on "Drive Desperate," too, while "Nights & Weekends" bounds along a greasy basso synth with Nathan Willett spouting apoplexy all over it before breaking into a surf-doom riff.
