The Reality Of My Surroundings
Marked by the band's sometimes astonishing technical ability, this third album from the late '80s/early '90s alterna-rock phenoms dispenses with the ska they first turned heads with and replaces it with heavy funk dipped in metal. Don't worry, though: These dudes are still total spazzes, and "Housework" brings back the reggae with a vengeance. Hits "Everyday Sunshine" (as funky and soulful as Billy Preston) and "Sunless Saturday" (they sound like Styx!) made the charts for a reason, but the real fun lies in seeing which direction each song takes. Could be anywhere.
