Turn off the Lies
Label: Warner Records
Two years after ILoveMakonnen snuck onto pop radio with his cheery anthem “Tuesday,” the Southern oddball is firing warning shots at his record label for not releasing his debut album. “I swear my album better drop this fall/Don’t try to play me for another EP,” he raps on “Solo.” He tries to appeal to rap excavators that love everything weird and bizarre about the Atlanta scene, and an audience that just wants a memorable hook to sing along to. The former gets “Big Gucci,” a tribute to imprisoned rapper Gucci Mane, along with mediocre trap choons like “Uwonteva” and “Pushin’.” The poptimists get to enjoy “Where I’m At” and “Back Again.” It’s all delivered in ILoveMakonnen’s best attribute -- a wavy voice that perpetually floats out of tune.
