One of the nicest things about this Yorkshire dreamboat is his deference to elders, whether giving Idris Elba space to orate in the album’s opening moments or handing over crowd-pleasing moves to Gap Band frontman Charlie Wilson on the hi-NRG workout “Tiring Game.” In a quandary typical for so many Northern Soul adherents, Newman’s voice carries a wallop the material can’t always match. But there’s plenty of highlights here: the faux-exoticism of “Lights Down,” a funky snap atop “Come and Get It,” and all those punchy horns stacked to the rafters on disco overkill “All My Heart.”
