If 2011's Hurry Up, We're Dreaming was the biggest and most bombastic album that could plausibly be called "bedroom pop" -- a vast, stormy ocean for introverts -- its follow-up is a party record. Equipped with rubbery hooks, what-the-hell eclecticism, and a small team of guest vocalists, Junk has more in common with 2008’s svelte yet poppy offering Saturdays=Youth, but its nostalgia is less straightforward. Here the band's retro-leaning electro pop takes on modern club beats and chintzy TV-theme impressions, impressing mightily with a crawling saxophone ballad (featuring Norwegian baroque pop auteur Susanne Sundfor), a wailing guitar solo, and contributions from Beck smooshed across its bright canvas in a giddy smear. It’s all damn hard to resist.
