Spotlight (Oh Nostalgia)

Pete Wentz may have gotten the publicity, but it was Patrick Stump's soulful suburban angst that made Fall Out Boy's punk-pop pathos so palatable. On his first solo venture, the former FOB vocalist heads straight for the blue-eyed funk. Truant Wave rocks it JT-style, coaxing, seducing, even grandstanding in a resonant tenor -- only Stump's got a more impressive belt than Justin ever did, one that even verges on MJ (see "Cute Girls"). Even more impressive is the production: synthy sheens, Princely grooves, oddball details (like the bells on "Porcelain"), even a drum solo that isn't annoying!
