In their wake, a host of rising acts have taken the baton and run with it, with new names such as The Staves, Hurray for the Riff Raff and Charlie Straw proving the gold rush isn’t over yet. Our Top 50 captures a cross-section of the very best tracks folk music has given us over the last year or so.

Of course, there are plenty of acts rooted in folk who’ve been around longer and remain as relevant as ever, whether they adhere to a more traditional format, like Seth Lakeman, Show of Hands and Kate Rusby, or simply use folk as an ingredient to add heft to broader songwriting styles, like Eliza Carthy, Billy Bragg and Laura Marling.
